I didn’t miss home. I missed home-cooked food.

Frozen meals made me sick, takeout made me broke, and cooking felt impossible. That’s when I found a way to bring my mom’s food — wherever life took me.

The Away Kitchen was built to be that small, familiar comfort when the world feels too big.

When I left Delhi for college in Pune, and later moved to the US, I thought I was prepared. I packed everything I needed — clothes, documents, even a few packets of snacks from home. But what I wasn’t ready for was how much I’d miss my mom’s food.

It hit me harder than I expected. The meals I grew up with — simple, warm, full of love — were suddenly out of reach. I tried frozen meals, takeout, whatever was quick and easy. But nothing tasted right. Nothing felt like home. And after a while, I could feel it in my body too — I was always tired, always bloated, and honestly, just homesick.

That’s when we started experimenting. My mom and I looked into ways we could preserve her cooking — without chemicals, without changing the taste. That’s how we discovered freeze-drying. It worked. Her dal, her sabzi — it all stayed just as she made it. The smell, the taste, even the comfort — it was all still there.

What began as a way to fix my own problem slowly turned into something bigger. We realized there are so many people like me — students, professionals, travelers — living away from home, trying to adjust, and just missing that one comforting thing: a home-cooked meal.

So we built The Away Kitchen. Not as a business first, but as a way to give people that little piece of home they miss. It’s for anyone who wants to carry a bit of their mom’s (or dad’s or dadi’s) cooking with them. Anyone who’s away from home, but still needs that one familiar bite to feel less alone.

It’s not just food. It’s a feeling — of home, of care, of being remembered.
